In a surprise move, Twitter CEO Elon Musk has changed the company’s logo, replacing the iconic bluebird with the popular internet meme, Doge. The decision has caused a stir on social media, with many praising the move as a nod to internet culture. However, some have also questioned the implications of using a meme as a corporate logo.
The Doge meme, featuring a picture of a Japanese Shiba Inu dog named Kobasu, became popular in 2013. The image is often accompanied by humorous, broken English phrases written in colorful comic sans font. The meme was so popular that year that it even spawned its own cryptocurrency, called Dogecoin. The internet phenomenon was widely regarded as the best meme of 2013 by various media organizations.
While some may view the decision to feature a meme as a corporate logo as controversial, the move is not entirely unexpected. Musk has made a number of changes to Twitter since acquiring the company, including introducing a subscription service and exploring the use of decentralized technology.
The original dog in the picture is Kobasu, who was born on November 2, 2005. He was brought home by a Japanese teacher named Atsuku Sato in 2008, who named the dog after a round fruit due to the dog’s round mouth. The female dog that appears on internet media is another Shiba Inu named Suki, who belongs to photographer Jonathan Fleming. Suki gained internet fame after a picture of her wearing a shrunken scarf went viral.
Overall, the move to feature Doge as the new Twitter logo is another example of the company’s willingness to embrace internet culture and appeal to a younger audience. While it remains to be seen whether the move will be a success, it is clear that Musk is not afraid to take risks and make bold decisions when it comes to Twitter.
